For the Salazar family, game days at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio are a cherished tradition. Lifelong fans of the San Antonio Spurs, Paul Salazar and his son, PJ, have taken their passion for basketball to new heights after being selected to join the newly formed superfan group known as the “Jackals.” This initiative, supported by Spurs’ star player Victor Wembanyama, has not only deepened their connection to the team but also strengthened their father-son bond.
“I just look forward to the games every single day,” PJ expressed, reflecting on the excitement surrounding their new role. The opportunity came unexpectedly for the duo when they learned about the tryouts for the Jackals. “The first time I heard about it, I said, ‘Wow, they’re having tryouts?’” PJ recalled. They eagerly participated and successfully earned a spot in the group, which now sees them attending every home game to cheer on their beloved Spurs.
Creating Lasting Memories Together
For Paul Salazar, being part of this inaugural group has provided experiences that he wishes he had during his own childhood. “Growing up, I didn’t get to meet as many players as he’s able to meet now,” he said. Sharing these moments together has created lasting memories that Paul believes PJ will treasure for a lifetime.
“Doing it together is good for me, but it’s something he’s going to remember for the rest of his life,” Paul added, highlighting the emotional impact of their shared experiences. He noted that being involved in the Jackals has encouraged PJ to be more social and open, sharing, “I just tell him to be himself.” Observing his son engage confidently with others has been a rewarding experience for Paul, who admitted, “It makes me very emotional to see that.”
As a testament to his involvement, PJ was named Jackal of the Month for January, further solidifying his role within the group. “We used to sit way up in the nosebleed seats, and now we’re down here,” PJ said, reflecting on their journey. “It’s crazy, but I love it.”
More Than Just a Game
PJ’s enthusiasm for the team is palpable, particularly for his favorite player, Keldon Johnson. “The one and only big body, Keldon Johnson or KJ, let’s go!” he exclaimed, showcasing the passion that many fans feel towards the players who represent them on the court.
The Salazars are a reminder of how deeply the San Antonio Spurs resonate with the community. For many, the team transcends the sport itself, embodying a sense of family and connection that extends beyond the basketball court. As they continue to support their team, Paul and PJ Salazar demonstrate that the bonds forged through shared experiences, such as cheering for the Spurs, can create cherished memories that last a lifetime.
