The recent opening of the new Mitchell High School has transformed the local sports landscape, providing a modern facility that enhances the experience for both athletes and spectators. This state-of-the-art venue not only serves as a home for the Kernels but also embodies the community’s commitment to fostering student development and pride.
During the inaugural Jerry Opbroek Invitational wrestling tournament, attendees experienced firsthand the advantages of the new gym. The event featured four full-sized wrestling mats and ample seating, which showcased the potential of this facility. This was the first opportunity for many, including myself, to observe such a well-organized tournament in a space designed for community engagement.
Community Commitment Shines Through
As the basketball season approaches, the significance of the new gym becomes increasingly apparent. With a seating capacity of approximately 2,000, the venue is poised to create an electric atmosphere that matches the talent of its athletes. The community’s investment is evident, reflecting a strong belief in the future of Mitchell and its students.
Since the gym’s opening, many community members have expressed excitement about the possibility of sellout crowds. In response to questions about capacity, I have consistently emphasized the importance of filling these seats, which would solidify the home-court advantage for our teams.
The topic of parking often arises in discussions about the new facility. Many people desire the convenience of parking close to the entrance, and while I understand these concerns, it is essential to analyze the actual numbers. Comparatively, the new high school offers a similar parking capacity to the Corn Palace, a beloved local venue known for hosting large events.
According to my calculations, the Corn Palace area provides 867 parking spaces within a two-block radius, while Mitchell High School offers 859 spaces. Although this represents a slight difference, the high school parking is more centrally located near the main entrances, providing easier access for attendees.
Preparing for Packed Crowds
When considering the average attendance at events, a crowd of 1,500 fans is common. Based on industry standards, approximately two people share a vehicle, meaning that about 750 parking spaces are necessary. With our 859 spaces available, the new school not only meets this requirement but also offers a buffer of nearly 100 additional spots.
The community has made a significant investment in a facility designed to accommodate both large crowds and ambitious aspirations. I encourage everyone to attend events at the new Mitchell High School. Supporting our students not only benefits them but also strengthens our community spirit.
Join us this season to witness the excitement and pride that the new venue brings. Together, we can celebrate the achievements of our young athletes and embrace the future of Mitchell. I look forward to seeing you at the game.
