Mission Viejo Advances to Semifinals with Late Touchdown Against El Modena

In a thrilling CIF-SS Division 3 flag football playoff match on October 28, 2025, Mission Viejo secured a 13-6 victory over El Modena at El Modena High School. The Diablos’ quarterback, Bailey McNeal, showcased her skills by leading two scoring drives, including a decisive touchdown in the closing seconds of the game.

The match was characterized by a fierce defensive battle. El Modena’s secondary, known for its interception capabilities, managed to disrupt several plays. Despite this, McNeal’s performance proved pivotal. She opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, giving Mission Viejo a 6-0 lead. With just 42 seconds remaining, McNeal sealed the win with a 5-yard touchdown, culminating an impressive drive that underscored her leadership.

Coach Darrel Letcher praised McNeal, noting, “Believe it or not, she is a senior and this is her first year playing quarterback. We have a complicated offense, and I put a lot of pressure on them.” McNeal’s ability to adapt and execute under pressure was evident as she orchestrated a 56-yard drive for the first score and a further 24-yard drive for the game-winner.

El Modena, under the guidance of Coach Steve Tafua, showcased defensive prowess with five interceptions, including two by Madison Gallegos. However, the Vanguards struggled to convert these opportunities into points. Their lone touchdown came in the third quarter when quarterback Halle Calderon executed a clever pump fake before running in from 3 yards out, following an interception and a personal foul against the Diablos.

Despite their defensive successes, El Modena’s inability to capitalize on their red zone opportunities proved costly. Tafua reflected on the game, stating, “We had opportunities. Defense gave us a lot of interceptions. We didn’t capitalize on offense. We just didn’t execute. When it comes down to the third round, it’s all the little things that matter. We just fell short.”

With this win, Mission Viejo advances to the semifinals, where they will host Roosevelt of Eastvale, who triumphed over La Habra in their quarterfinal matchup. This marks a significant achievement for the Diablos, as it is their first playoff run since flag football was sanctioned as a Southern Section sport in 2023.

As the playoffs continue, the Diablos aim to build on their success, drawing inspiration from their recent performance and the strong team chemistry that McNeal emphasizes, saying, “I couldn’t do it without my teammates. I have so much respect for each of them. They will fight every single minute for me, and I’ll fight every single minute for them.”
