The Kansas City Chiefs received encouraging news regarding quarterback Gardner Minshew, who has avoided a serious injury after an examination confirmed that his ACL is not torn. Minshew, who is currently serving as the backup to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, suffered a knee injury during the Chiefs’ Week 16 game against the Tennessee Titans.
After taking the field following Mahomes‘ ACL and LCL tear, Minshew managed only 15 yards before sustaining his own injury. Initial fears of a significant setback arose when he was carted off the field. Fortunately, reports indicate that Minshew has sustained a bone bruise rather than a tear, allowing him to be fully fit for the upcoming free agency, as confirmed by ESPN.
In Minshew’s absence during the Titans game, Chris Oladokun stepped in as quarterback and also started the Chiefs’ final two games of the season. Throughout his NFL career, Minshew has participated in 63 games, playing for teams such as the Jaguars, Eagles, Colts, Raiders, and now the Chiefs. He signed a one-year contract with Kansas City last summer.
Coaching Confidence in Minshew’s Future
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed confidence in Minshew’s abilities, suggesting that the veteran quarterback has a future with the team. “We had brought Gardner in to do that [backup role],” Reid stated. “Unfortunately, he got hurt early in that (Titans) game, but we still have a ton of confidence that he can do that.” He further noted that Minshew is the type of player the team values for his experience and professionalism.
Minshew’s injury comes at a crucial time for the Chiefs, as they navigate a challenging season following Mahomes’ surgery the day after his injury against the Los Angeles Chargers. The three-time Super Bowl champion is aiming for a return in time for Week 1 of the next season. “The doctor kind of gives you goals to get to,” Mahomes explained. “I just try to maximize those – they hold me back, because I always want to go a little bit further.”
With both quarterbacks managing their respective recoveries, the Chiefs are poised to maintain their competitive edge in the league. Minshew’s recovery and Mahomes’ rehabilitation will be closely monitored as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
