Jaden Rashada Settles Lawsuit with Billy Napier and Others

Former Florida Gators quarterback Jaden Rashada has reached a confidential settlement with several parties, including former head coach Billy Napier, booster Hugh Hathcock, his company Velocity Automotives, and former Florida staffer Marcus Castro-Walker. This agreement concludes a lawsuit initiated by Rashada concerning a dispute over a promised Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal during his recruitment in 2023.

Rashada, a former top-100 recruit, initially committed to the Miami Hurricanes before switching to the Gators. He alleged that he was misled into signing with Florida under false promises of an NIL deal exceeding $13 million. Officially signing with the Gators in December 2022, Rashada was released just one month later due to ongoing disagreements related to the NIL arrangement.

The lawsuit progressed through the legal system, with Rashada’s claims of fraudulent misrepresentation, aiding and abetting fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, and negligent misrepresentation being recognized as legally valid. Following a mediation conference held on February 10, 2024, the parties reached a settlement, although the details remain undisclosed according to court documents. A trial was set to begin on July 20, 2024, had the parties not settled.

This resolution allows Rashada and the defendants to move on from a situation that had garnered significant media attention and overshadowed their careers. Rashada, who has become well-known for his legal challenges, is now set to play for his fourth college program in four years. He has accumulated just 278 career snaps, throwing five touchdowns against four interceptions. After stints at Arizona State, Georgia, and Sacramento State, he is projected to compete for the backup quarterback position at Mississippi State behind rising sophomore Kamario Taylor.

For Napier, who was a central figure in the lawsuit while coaching the Gators, he is preparing for his first season at James Madison University after finishing with a 22-23 record in his tenure at Florida. Despite recruiting another elite quarterback, DJ Lagway, shortly after Rashada’s departure, Napier’s Gators never exceeded eight wins in a season and he was dismissed seven games into the 2025 season.

The Florida Gators program, now relieved from the negative publicity associated with the lawsuit, aims to enhance its NIL management and strategy. Under new head coach Jon Sumrall, the Gators are focused on returning to a competitive standard following three losing seasons in the last four years. Preparations for spring camp are set to commence on March 3, 2024.

With the lawsuit resolved, both Rashada and Napier can now focus on their respective paths, moving beyond the legal entanglements that have affected their careers.
