Fraser’s wrestling team, the Ramblers, is poised for a significant challenge as they face off against Macomb Dakota in the regional semifinals on February 7, 2024, at 17:00. The match marks another attempt for Fraser to break through to the MHSAA state tournament, a goal that has eluded the team for several years.
The Ramblers, sporting a record of 22-6, have consistently shown promise but have often fallen short against local rivals in previous tournaments. Coach Richard Julien, who has led the team for years, expressed optimism about their chances despite the tough competition. “We’ve come close a few times,” Julien noted. “We face Dakota, and we’re hoping for a good result. They are always very tough. We do match up with them in certain weight classes.”
### Strong Season Highlights for Fraser
Fraser’s performance this season has been commendable. The team finished 10th out of 38 schools at the Macomb Wrestling Invitational Classic in December, demonstrating their competitive spirit. They secured a perfect 5-0 record to clinch the Macomb Area Conference White Division crown and recently placed sixth at the MAC Red-White Tournament. Seven wrestlers from Fraser finished in the top four at the Chippewa Valley-hosted Division 1 Individual District, further solidifying their reputation as a formidable contender.
Despite facing challenges earlier in the season, including several wrestlers not returning for the 2025-26 campaign, Julien remains hopeful. “Fraser is a team on the rise,” he said. “We will bring back several kids again next year if everybody comes out. The kids we do have worked so hard for us to have the type of year that we’ve had.”
### Dakota’s Legacy and Expectations
In contrast, Macomb Dakota has established itself as a dominant force in the region, making its 14th consecutive appearance in the team regionals. The Cougars have claimed 12 regional titles in the last 14 years, a testament to their strength under head coach Ed Skowneski. Dakota is expected to be a tough opponent, having advanced to the Division 1 state semifinals three times during Skowneski’s tenure.
The Cougars recently qualified eight wrestlers for the regionals, one more than Fraser, underscoring their depth of talent. Dakota’s Lucas Harper has emerged as one of their standout wrestlers this season, contributing to the team’s success and consistency.
### Regional Semifinals Overview
The regional semifinals on February 7 will also feature a matchup between L’Anse Creuse and St. Clair Shores Lakeview, with finals set to begin approximately 10 minutes after the semifinals conclude. The anticipation is palpable as teams prepare to vie for a chance at the state tournament, with Fraser aiming to upset Dakota and make a significant mark in the competition.
From a personal perspective, the competition holds special meaning for Coach Julien, as his son, Eric Julien, is at the helm of Lakeview’s wrestling program. “We will have to find a way to beat Dakota, but I would love the chance to wrestle Lakeview. After all, my son is their head coach,” Julien remarked with a hint of humor.
As the Fraser Ramblers gear up for this pivotal match, the team’s determination and hard work will be closely watched, marking a defining moment in their wrestling season.
