Eagles’ DeVonta Smith Primed for Breakout in New Offense

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to embark on a new chapter in their offensive strategy under offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. This revamped system aims to enhance the running game, create advantageous running lanes for Saquon Barkley, and optimize play-action opportunities for quarterback Jalen Hurts. Coach Nick Sirianni is particularly optimistic about the potential impact on wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who is entering his sixth season.

Sirianni emphatically dismissed any notion that Smith has reached his peak, stating, “I think he continually gets better. I think you saw him have a great year in 2025.” He attributes Smith’s ongoing improvement to his toughness, intelligence, and talent, suggesting that these qualities position him for further success in the upcoming season.

The Eagles face a pivotal decision regarding star receiver A.J. Brown, whose potential trade remains a topic of speculation. Both Sirianni and general manager Howie Roseman provided vague responses when questioned about Brown’s future with the team during a February 20 media session. Roseman acknowledged the frequent offseason discussions regarding player trades, emphasizing the need for the team to improve while retaining its top talent. “Every decision will be made with that, no matter who the player is,” he remarked.

In recent years, Smith has displayed remarkable consistency, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in three of his five seasons. He led the Eagles in receiving during the 2025 season with 1,008 yards, narrowly edging out Brown, who recorded 1,003 yards. The possibility of Brown’s departure could translate to increased opportunities for Smith, as he would likely see more targets, receptions, and consequently, yardage.

Smith’s production is noteworthy; he achieved a career-high 1,196 yards in 2022, coinciding with Brown’s franchise record of 1,496 yards that same season. Even last year, Smith received 113 targets, just eight fewer than Brown. The 2025 season saw both receivers limited to only 13 games each due to injuries, affecting their overall performance.

Sirianni emphasized the importance of ensuring Smith receives ample targets, stating, “Getting DeVonta Smith the ball, and getting him targets, is always going to be important… for the success of our football team.” As the Eagles aim to improve their running game, which saw Barkley’s production dip from 2,005 yards in 2025 to 1,140 yards last season, Smith’s role could become even more critical.

Barkley’s performance improved as the previous season progressed, averaging 4.7 yards per carry in the final nine games, up from 3.3 yards in the first seven. Sirianni expressed confidence in Barkley’s ability to adapt to new blocking schemes under Mannion, stating, “He’s just a great football player,” and highlighting his versatility across different offensive strategies.

The Eagles’ offense has room for improvement after finishing 24th in total yards (311 yards per game) and 19th in points scored (22.3 points) in 2025. A healthier offensive line and a more dynamic Hurts could significantly impact the team’s success. If executed effectively, Mannion’s offensive scheme could elevate Smith’s performance both with and without Brown on the roster.

As the Eagles prepare for the upcoming season, the focus will be on leveraging their new offensive strategies to maximize the talents of DeVonta Smith. Sirianni concluded, “You’re seeing him continue to do these things and make plays only that he can make on the football field. I think you’ll continue to see him on the rise.”
