Cody Bellinger Signs $162.5 Million Deal to Stay with Yankees

Cody Bellinger has finalized a five-year contract worth $162.5 million to remain with the New York Yankees. This agreement marks the conclusion of negotiations for one of Major League Baseball’s most sought-after free-agent hitters. The deal was reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan and confirmed by a source familiar with the discussions, who spoke anonymously as the agreement is contingent upon passing a physical examination.

Bellinger’s contract includes a $20 million signing bonus and a comprehensive no-trade provision. He retains the option to opt out after the 2027 or 2028 seasons, allowing him to re-enter free agency. Should a work stoppage occur that prevents games in 2027, the opt-out dates will be adjusted accordingly, extending to the end of the 2028 season.

In the previous season, Bellinger showcased his talents by hitting .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. At Yankee Stadium, he excelled with a .302 batting average, launching 18 home runs and driving in 55 RBIs. The left-handed hitter, who played in 149 games as an outfielder and seven at first base, enjoyed a healthy season in 2023, marking his first injury-free year since 2022.

Bellinger began his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he earned the title of National League Rookie of the Year in 2017 and was named the NL MVP in 2019. Over his eight seasons in the league, he has maintained a career batting average of .261, with 225 home runs and 695 RBIs. He initially joined the Yankees after a stint with the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2024 season.

This contract not only solidifies Bellinger’s presence in the Yankees’ lineup but also underlines the team’s commitment to building a competitive roster as they aim for championship success. The forthcoming seasons will be critical for Bellinger, who has proven himself as a valuable asset in the Yankees’ quest to reclaim their status as a dominant force in Major League Baseball.
