The Colorado Avalanche delivered a commanding performance, defeating the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 on March 5, 2024. This victory at the Honda Center not only marked the end of the Ducks’ five-game winning streak but also showcased the Avalanche’s strong form as they secured their third consecutive win.
Parker Kelly played a pivotal role for Colorado, scoring two goals, while Cale Makar contributed with a goal and two assists. Other notable performances included Gabriel Landeskog and Martin Necas, who both found the back of the net. Additionally, Brock Nelson and Jack Drury each recorded two assists, further solidifying the Avalanche’s offensive prowess.
The Avalanche, currently leading the NHL with 91 points, maintained a six-point lead over the Dallas Stars in the Central Division ahead of their upcoming clash in Texas on March 8, 2024. Avalanche goalie Scott Wedgewood showcased his skills by stopping 27 shots, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
Despite the loss, the Ducks managed to keep pace in the Pacific Division, where they remain just one point behind the Vegas Golden Knights, who sit atop the standings with 70 points. The Ducks had previously enjoyed an impressive eight-game home winning streak before facing the Avalanche.
The game began with an intense back-and-forth, but the Avalanche took charge early. Makar opened the scoring midway through the first period with a well-placed wrist shot from the slot. Shortly thereafter, Necas extended the lead with a power-play goal at 14:05 of the first period, marking his fifth goal in as many games since the NHL season resumed. This brought his season total to 27 goals, just one shy of his career high established in the 2022-23 season with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Ducks briefly responded when Cutter Gauthier netted his sixth goal in six games at 4:50 of the second period. However, Kelly quickly reestablished the two-goal cushion for Colorado, scoring his first of the night at 15:03 of the same period.
In the third period, the Avalanche sealed their victory. Landeskog scored with a powerful one-timer from the slot, assisted by Nathan MacKinnon, pushing the score to 4-1 just 4:35 into the final frame. This marked MacKinnon’s 100th point of the season, achieving this milestone for the fourth consecutive year. He trails only Edmonton’s Connor McDavid by five points in the league scoring race.
Kelly capped off the scoring for Colorado with his career-best 15th goal of the season at 10:06 in the third period, ensuring a decisive win for the Avalanche.
The Avalanche’s offensive depth and defensive resilience were on full display against the Ducks, setting the stage for an exciting matchup against the Stars later this week.
