Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a beloved community leader and advocate, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on December 3, 2025. She was 74 years old. Diabetes was a significant factor contributing to her death, leaving a profound impact on her family and the many organizations she served throughout her life.
Born in Queens, New York, Cathy was the daughter of Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea. She spent her formative years in Hermosa Beach, California, where she graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969. In 1978, she married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy, and together they became deeply involved in the local business community, particularly at the Shea Company, which focused on glass manufacturing.
Cathy and Dick McCurdy were well-known not only for their entrepreneurial efforts but also for their extensive volunteer work in Hermosa Beach. Cathy served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to the Hermosa Valley School. She played a pivotal role in founding the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, empowering young students to engage in community service.
In addition to her educational contributions, Cathy actively supported the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association. Her commitment to public service extended to her role as the Hermosa Beach representative on the LA County Beach Commission, a position she held for nearly a decade.
Both Cathy and Dick were integral members of the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where they took on various leadership roles, including the presidency. In recognition of her contributions to the community, Cathy was honored as “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998, a testament to her dedication and hard work.
As the community reflects on Cathy McCurdy’s legacy, many are preparing to pay their final respects. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of life will take place at the Kiwanis Hall, 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach, allowing friends and family to share memories and honor her contributions to the community.
Cathy McCurdy’s passing marks the end of an era for many in Hermosa Beach, where her influence and spirit will be remembered through the numerous lives she touched.
