Community Mourns Loss of Judith Ernst, Pioneer Educator at 81

Judith Ann Ernst, an influential educator and cherished community member, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2025, at her home in Redondo Beach, California. She was 81 years old. Known affectionately as Judy, she made a lasting impact on education in the region, particularly through her founding of the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach.

Born on December 20, 1943, in Manhattan Beach, California, Judy was a lifelong resident of the South Bay area. She graduated from Mira Costa High School in 1961 and continued her education at UCLA, where she cultivated her passion for teaching. At just twenty-four, she established the Montessori School in 1968, starting with twelve students, including her three children. This initiative exemplified her pioneering spirit, especially as a woman in business during that era.

Judy’s commitment to the Montessori method fostered an environment where curiosity and kindness thrived. Her contributions to education shaped the lives of many families in the community, and her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.

Beyond her professional achievements, Judy was known for her adventurous spirit and zest for life. She enjoyed free-diving with her husband, John Ernst, and embraced fashion with a distinctive elegance. Always dressed impeccably, she brought a sense of style to every occasion. Judy also developed a love for tennis, frequently participating in tournaments alongside John and their son, Jeff. Her enthusiasm for the game persisted into her later years, showcasing her vibrant energy.

Judy is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, John; her children, Jeff, Greg, Lynn, Darlyn, and Leila; and her eleven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ardith and Herral Jones; her daughter, Nadine; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Her life was a testament to courage, curiosity, and compassion, leaving a profound impact on all who knew her. A celebration of Judy’s life is scheduled for November 2, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and community members to honor her memory and contributions.
