Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a cherished educator and community member, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, she was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. Kathleen’s legacy as an elementary school teacher spanned nearly four decades, during which she profoundly impacted the lives of countless students.
In her personal life, Kathleen moved to Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone. Together, they built a family that includes their daughter, ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek, and son, Paul (Kelly) Giacalone. Kathleen took great pride in her four grandchildren, Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna, who brought her immense joy.
Kathleen dedicated 39 years to teaching, a profession she approached with passion and commitment. After her retirement, she pursued her love for travel, exploring new places and cultures. Her adventurous spirit was matched by her deep commitment to her family and community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kathleen’s name to organizations that were close to her heart, including Shriners Children’s Hospital, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild. These contributions reflect Kathleen’s caring nature and her desire to help those in need.
A Funeral Mass will be held on December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and community members to pay their respects and celebrate her life.
Kathleen Giacalone’s legacy will live on through her family and the many lives she touched during her years of teaching and community service. Her warmth, kindness, and dedication will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.
