Comedian Michael Che has publicly condemned those celebrating the pause in food stamp benefits due to the recent government shutdown. In a pointed commentary, Che highlighted the alleged racist sentiments surrounding the treatment of welfare recipients, particularly among vulnerable communities, including Black individuals.
The government shutdown has led to a suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), affecting millions who rely on these benefits for basic necessities. Che’s remarks came via his Instagram account, where he expressed outrage at the “racist videos” he observed celebrating this disruption. He stated, “This SNAP freeze is really messed up. And I keep seeing a lot of racist videos celebrating families not being able to buy groceries.”
Che’s critique extended beyond mere observations; he voiced concerns about the stigmatization of welfare recipients. He argued that the prevailing narrative suggests that while some individuals exploit welfare benefits, the entire system should be dismantled, saying, “There’s this weird idea that since some people have taken advantage of welfare benefits in the hood, NOBODY should receive help, at all?”
In his remarks, Che painted a broader picture of societal inequities, asserting, “This country is built on greedy individuals taking shortcuts and gaming the system to their benefit, but for some reason, when poor people find a way to turn nickel into a dime, they’re judged more severely. Especially blacks.”
The comedian’s comments resonate amid ongoing political tensions regarding government spending and welfare programs. He criticized the divisive narrative that often pits Americans against each other, asserting that the focus should instead be on addressing the needs of the poor. “I know the whole hustle is to hate each other here so we can fight in the comments and up our engagements,” he noted. “But let’s draw the line at feeding the poor.”
Che also shared a personal anecdote about his own experiences growing up on government assistance, emphasizing the stigma associated with using food stamps. “I grew up on free cheese and powdered milk and waiting for your friends to leave the store so they won’t see me pay with stamps. That stuff ain’t as glamorous as it sounds. I promise,” he reflected.
The ongoing government shutdown, which has reached a critical point, is linked to political disputes primarily between Democrats and Republicans. As of now, President Donald Trump has instructed government lawyers to seek guidance on how to legally continue SNAP payments during the shutdown. He expressed concern over the implications for American families, stating, “I do NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT.”
As the situation develops, the impact on millions of families relying on SNAP benefits remains a pressing concern. Che’s outspoken stance highlights the intersection of race, welfare, and political decision-making, raising significant questions about societal attitudes towards poverty and assistance programs.
