Cory Booker and Alexis Lewis Celebrate Marriage After Whirlwind Romance

U.S. Senator Cory Booker married real estate executive Alexis Lewis in a ceremony that blended their personal stories and traditions. The New Jersey Democrat announced their union in a social media post on Sunday, revealing that they exchanged vows in two significant locations: Newark, New Jersey, and Washington D.C.

Booker, 56, shared that the couple said “I do” in Newark on November 24, 2023, during a legal ceremony officiated by Judge Julien Xavier Neals. Following this, they celebrated with an interfaith ceremony and a family-only reception in D.C. on Saturday night. The senator, a Christian, and Lewis, who is Jewish, chose to honor both of their backgrounds at the celebration. The D.C. event was officiated by two of Booker’s long-time friends: Reverend Dr. David Jefferson Sr. of Newark’s Metropolitan Baptist Church and Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills.

The couple, who reside in Newark, first crossed paths in May 2022 through a mutual friend known for successfully connecting people. After a five-hour first date in D.C., they enjoyed an even more memorable second outing that included dinner at a Newark tapas restaurant, attending the Broadway musical “Suffs” in New York City, and sharing a long walk in Newark, where Booker recounted the places that shaped his life.

August 24, 2023, marked a pivotal moment in their relationship when Booker proposed in Kauai, Hawaii. The proposal featured local musicians serenading the couple with Mariah Carey’s “Dreamlover.” Booker expressed deep admiration for Lewis, stating, “Alexis is one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life.” He added that she has helped him discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone he loves.

Lewis, 38, serves as a director of investments at Brasa Capital Management, a Los Angeles real estate investment firm. Her professional background includes working for former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and she holds degrees from New York University and Cornell University.

At the Newark ceremony, the couple’s parents acted as witnesses. Despite the absence of Booker’s father, Cary Booker, who passed away in 2013, the families celebrated the occasion with traditional Italian pastries from Calandra’s Bakery and a uniquely crafted vegan chocolate chip cookie dough cake from Papa Ganache Project.

The couple’s D.C. reception featured a huppah, where family members witnessed the blessing by the rabbi and pastor. The cake, designed with flavors chosen by the bride’s mother, the groom’s mother, and the bride herself, included almond with raspberry, chocolate with chocolate ganache, and funfetti for each tier.

The couple maintained a low profile regarding their wedding plans until the announcement, which was first reported by the New York Times. This joyful event follows a significant year for Booker, who has served as New Jersey’s senator since winning a special election in 2013. Notably, he made headlines earlier this year for delivering the longest individual speech in Senate history. Speculation surrounds his potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential election, adding to the public interest in his personal life.
