Atlanta officials, led by Mayor Andre Dickens, are advocating for property tax relief aimed at seniors aged 65 and older, ahead of a crucial vote on the November ballot. The legislation, known as Act 358, could save eligible seniors up to $1,000 annually by introducing a homestead exemption that reduces the assessed value of their properties by $50,000 for the portion of taxes allocated to the City of Atlanta Independent School District’s educational budget.

The initiative is a result of former State Senator Jason Esteves’s previous legislation, SB 330, which received backing from Mayor Dickens, State Representative Inga Willis, and members of the Atlanta legislative delegation. This measure aims to alleviate the financial pressures many seniors face due to rising living costs in Georgia.

A press conference is scheduled for today at 10:00 a.m. in the Mural Room at Atlanta City Hall, located at 55 Trinity Ave. During this event, officials will elaborate on the benefits of Act 358 and the importance of supporting seniors through this proposed tax relief. Media representatives are encouraged to RSVP via the official email of the City of Atlanta.

For detailed information about eligibility requirements and further statements from the officials involved, residents can visit the City of Atlanta’s official website. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to address the financial challenges faced by older residents and aims to secure necessary support at the upcoming ballot.
