A grand residence in Houston, Texas, has undergone a remarkable transformation, inspired by the charming aesthetics of the English countryside. Designer Meg Lonergan collaborated closely with her client, Brook Novelli, to infuse the home with a warm, inviting atmosphere reminiscent of quaint English cottages.
Brook, who has a deep appreciation for interior design thanks to her mother’s background in the field, sought to create a space that would accommodate her growing family. Instead of downsizing, she and her husband, Mike Novelli, decided to reinvent their expansive home, which spans 8,000 square feet, into a family retreat suitable for their now-adult children and their families.
Designing a Family-Centric Space
The Novelli family had lived in their home for over 25 years, and Brook’s extensive knowledge of interior design informed the project from its inception. “Downsizing was not on their agenda at all,” Lonergan said. “Brook’s brief was for us to adapt the house to fit her needs, and Mike’s, as grandparents.”
One of the project’s highlights was the creation of a bunk room for Brook’s grandsons, which was ingeniously carved from the attic space. “She knew exactly what she wanted, and her priority was family-driven,” Lonergan added.
To bring the vision to life, architect Matthew Mitchell contributed his expertise, refining the open-plan layout established in the original build. “Matthew was instrumental in helping to establish a few interior architectural details, such as the columns, to help these sprawling spaces become more defined,” Lonergan explained.
Elevating the Interior Aesthetic
The redesign embraced a palette of earthy greens and browns, inspired by the surrounding woodland, while adding vibrant pops of color to create an inviting environment. Lonergan’s approach masterfully blended elements of English design with Southern aesthetics, using traditional shapes and patterns that harmoniously coexist.
The dining room serves as a perfect example of this fusion. Hand-printed wallpaper by de Gournay envelops the walls, showcasing an English landscape, while an American-made buffet and dining table complement the design. This thoughtful integration allowed for the reuse of many of Brook’s cherished pieces, which were reupholstered to provide a fresh yet familiar ambiance.
The kitchen underwent significant changes as well, becoming more sociable and accommodating for larger gatherings. “Wood stain rather than paint has been used for the cabinetry, to create contrast and balance,” noted Lonergan. A long center island now serves as a focal point, inviting casual dining and interaction.
As the renovation progressed, Lonergan gently encouraged Brook to expand the project’s scope. Initially hesitant, Brook ultimately embraced changes, including a luxurious bathroom overhaul and a library that has become her favorite space. “I called Brook and explained that it was my professional duty to advise her to redo that bathroom,” Lonergan recalled. “Although serviceable, it would have felt stuck in a 2000s time capsule if she didn’t.”
The finished home stands as a testament to effective collaboration and creativity, marrying Texan and English influences seamlessly. The Novelli family now enjoys a space that not only reflects their heritage but also resonates with warmth and comfort.
In conclusion, while this Houston residence is deeply rooted in the Lone Star State, it captures the essence of an English countryside retreat, inviting family gatherings and afternoon tea alike.
