Neddy Latimer Honored with Shelter Naming in Leominster

A heartfelt ceremony took place on October 16, 2023, in Leominster, Massachusetts, where the new shelter was named the Neddy Latimer House in honor of the esteemed Executive Director of the Spanish American Center. The event celebrated Latimer’s decades-long commitment to serving her community, with attendees praising her leadership and dedication.
Community Comes Together to Celebrate a Leader
The naming ceremony attracted a diverse crowd, all eager to pay tribute to Latimer, who has dedicated her life to supporting those in need. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, described the shelter as “a beacon of hope” for the community. He emphasized that Latimer’s “passion for people regardless of their station in life” has been an inspiration to many.
“Neddy said we have to do this, there are children and families in need,” Bushman recalled, highlighting the collaborative efforts that led to the establishment of the shelter. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the project, stating that over $3 million was invested to ensure the building met necessary codes and provided an attractive environment. This investment came from a partnership among the Spanish American Center, United Way, and other organizations involved.
Before inviting Mayor Dean Mazzarella to speak, Bushman recognized the critical role played by local organizations in bringing the project to fruition. Mazzarella expressed gratitude for Latimer’s unwavering commitment to the community, stating, “Neddy is really the story of us.” He humorously remarked on the difficulty of denying funding requests from Latimer, further illustrating her influence and dedication.
A Symbol of Hope and New Beginnings
During the ceremony, various speakers reflected on the significance of the Neddy Latimer House. Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, noted that Latimer and her team consistently lead efforts to aid the most vulnerable populations. He remarked, “This program is about people regaining their dignity. That’s what Neddy represents.”
The Board Chair of both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope, Thomas Hughes, called the gathering “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He emphasized that the shelter signifies more than just a physical structure; it is a place for new beginnings, embodying the care, compassion, and community spirit that Latimer has fostered throughout her career.
Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, looked on proudly as the ceremony unfolded, reflecting the deep personal significance of the occasion. Latimer herself was visibly moved when the shelter’s sign was unveiled. “I am humbled and honored,” she said, expressing her gratitude to all those who contributed to the project. Her voice trembled as she addressed the crowd, emphasizing the shelter’s potential to serve as “a beacon of hope.”
As the event concluded, Bushman led a toast to Latimer, celebrating her legacy and the impact of the Neddy Latimer House. Guests were invited to tour the shelter, which featured warm and welcoming decor, including a sign that read, “Welcome, we’re glad you’re here.” Father Julio Granados from the Holy Family of Nazareth Church offered a benediction, reinforcing the shelter’s mission to provide peace and hope to all who enter.
The Neddy Latimer House stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the enduring impact of a dedicated leader. Latimer’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to serve and uplift those in need.
