Michigan Teacher Brandon Bailey Wins Excellence in Education Award

A dedicated educator from Cadillac has received recognition for his outstanding contributions to teaching. Brandon Bailey, a fifth-grade math and science teacher at Forest View Elementary, was awarded the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award, which includes a cash prize of $2,000 and eligibility for the $10,000 Educator of the Year award at the end of the school year.

The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to honor exceptional public school educators throughout the state. Bailey, who has dedicated 21 years to education, has spent the last eight years at Forest View Elementary. His approach focuses on hands-on instruction, building strong relationships with students, and fostering a safe and engaging classroom environment.

Bailey described his teaching philosophy: “I love to teach. I am passionate about it. I found it to be very rewarding to pass on the love of learning to someone else.” He emphasized the importance of involving students in their learning, believing that active participation leads to better understanding and retention of knowledge.

His nomination came from Heidi Collins, the parent of a former student. Collins praised Bailey for his ability to build trust and support students both academically and emotionally. “Mr. Bailey, without a doubt, goes above and beyond helping students surpass their expectations academically, as well as positively impacting their character, social skills and emotional development,” she stated.

Reflecting on his nomination, Bailey expressed gratitude for the connection he formed with Collins’ son, who joined his class later in the school year. “They didn’t enroll their son until after Halloween, but we were still able to make that connection,” he said. The two bonded over shared interests like fishing and hockey, which resonated with both the student and his mother.

Jake Wing, the principal of Forest View Elementary, highlighted that this recognition is well-deserved. He noted that awards like these shine a light on the daily efforts of educators that often go unnoticed. “There are wins every day in classrooms that people don’t always see. So it’s nice for him to get this recognition,” Wing remarked.

The impact of Bailey’s teaching is evident, according to Jennifer Brown, the Superintendent of Cadillac Area Public Schools. She remarked, “The historic student growth achieved in his classroom is not accidental. It reflects a standard Brandon set for himself through hard work, intentional planning and a relentless focus on rigorous learning.” Brown also emphasized that Bailey’s dedication strengthens the overall educational environment of Forest View Elementary and the district as a whole.

Bailey holds a bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. Alongside his teaching responsibilities, he also coaches the high school girls’ golf team. The Excellence in Education nominees are evaluated based on criteria including excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing student achievement.

As Bailey continues to inspire his students and colleagues, his recent award serves as a reminder of the profound impact that dedicated educators can have on their communities.
