Madison County, New York, is set to illuminate the Madison County Courthouse in green from November 4 to 11, 2023, as part of the initiative known as Operation Green Light. This marks the fifth consecutive year the county has participated in this nationwide campaign aimed at supporting military veterans. The initiative, spearheaded by the New York State Association of Counties in collaboration with the National Association of Counties, seeks to raise awareness about the challenges veterans face and promote available resources.
Operation Green Light was first launched in 2021 and has since evolved into a national effort. It was originally a collaboration between the New York State Association of Counties, the New York State County Executives’ Association, and the New York State County Veteran Service Officers’ Association. The campaign gained wider recognition when the National Association of Counties adopted it in 2022.
Community Participation Encouraged
In addition to the courthouse lighting, Madison County encourages local municipalities, businesses, and residents to join the initiative by changing at least one light to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light visible to neighbors or an interior light that sparks meaningful conversations. The goal is to create a visible expression of support for veterans.
“Operation Green Light is just one small way we can show our veterans how much we appreciate the sacrifices they made for our safety and security,” said James J. Cunningham, Chairman of the Madison County Board. He emphasized that the campaign serves as a reminder that veterans’ service is valued and appreciated.
Residents are also encouraged to reach out to veterans they know, offering assistance such as transportation to appointments or simply engaging in conversation. By shining a green light, the community can convey to veterans that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
Support Resources Available
Veterans in need of support are urged to contact the Madison County Veterans Service Agency at (315) 366-2395 or visit www.madisoncounty.ny.gov. The agency offers connections to federal, state, and local benefits and services through veteran peer counselors.
“Operation Green Light is a great initiative and opportunity to send a strong and highly visible message to both the veteran community and active-duty service members alike who may call Madison County home,” noted Ron Raymer, Director of the Madison County Veterans Service Agency and a veteran himself. He highlighted the county’s readiness to support veterans and provide a network of services designed to assist them in their transition to civilian life.
Participants in Operation Green Light are encouraged to share their involvement on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight. Although the event focuses on the week of Veterans Day, the message of support is intended to resonate year-round.
