John R. Allen, Funeral Director and co-owner of Allen Funeral Home in Morristown, has earned a Certification in Advanced Christian Studies. This achievement comes through a collaborative program offered by Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and the Richard and Julia Wilke Institute for Discipleship at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. The rigorous, year-long program is designed to provide advanced theological grounding within the Methodist tradition for both clergy and laity.
The curriculum encompasses six core areas of study. Participants explore subjects such as Methodist identity, history, and doctrine; the divinity of Christ; Christian ethics; eschatology; the Psalms; and the role of women in the historic Christian church. Each area of concentration lasts between eight to twelve weeks, featuring weekly lectures from leading Christian scholars across the United States.
Allen, who is a Certified Lay Minister in the Methodist Church, has pursued formal theological education for over a decade. He began his advanced Christian studies in 2012 and completed a Master’s Degree in Ministerial Studies in 2018 at Southwestern College. His commitment to education is evident, as he has taught courses within the Certified Lay Minister program since 2014. Additionally, he has served as District Director of Lay Servant Ministries in the Holston Annual Conference for several years.
Commitment to Community and Lifelong Learning
Beyond his educational pursuits, Allen continues to contribute to the Morristown community through his work at Allen Funeral Home. He views funeral service as a calling rooted in compassion, presence, and pastoral care. His ongoing theological education is a testament to his dedication to lifelong learning and faithful service within both the church and the community.
Allen’s recent certification reflects a significant step in his journey as a minister and educator. It reinforces his commitment to deepening his understanding of Christian teachings and enhancing his ability to serve both his congregation and the broader community effectively. Through this achievement, he exemplifies the integration of professional vocation with spiritual growth, setting an inspiring example for others in the field.
