ICMA Conference Highlights Tampa’s Compassionate Aid for Foster Youth

The recent International County/City Management Association (ICMA) conference in downtown Tampa underscored a significant initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable youth entering the foster care system. Attendees celebrated the Hillsborough County Children’s Services’ *Duffels of Dignity* program, which seeks to provide children with a more dignified way to transport their belongings than the commonly used plastic trash bags.

During the event, delegates dedicated time to assembling 300 duffel bags for distribution across Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. This collaborative effort exemplified community spirit, as participants packed the bags with essential items, including personal care products and teddy bears. The event was characterized by a sense of compassion, as attendees crafted heart-shaped cards to include encouraging messages for the children who would receive these bags.

According to a report from HCFL Government, over 2,000 personal care items were collected for this service project, showcasing the commitment of both the local community and organizations like ICMA. These efforts aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of children who often face challenging circumstances.

Community Impact and Support Agencies

The filled duffel bags were distributed to various local foster care and support agencies, including the *Children’s Network of Hillsborough County*, *Family Support Services of the Suncoast*, *West Florida Foster Care Services Inc.*, and *Children’s Services’ Children & Families in Need of Services program*. By providing these bags, the initiative seeks to alleviate some of the indignities faced by foster youth, offering them a sense of normalcy and care during turbulent times.

Community members wishing to support the *Duffels of Dignity* program can contribute by donating new or gently used duffel bags, suitcases, and backpacks. Additionally, unopened personal care items such as toothbrushes, shampoo, and deodorant are also welcome. The Children’s Services administrative office, located at 3191 Clay Mangum Lane, Tampa, FL 33618, is open to receiving donations. Contributions can also be made through the program’s Amazon Wish List, allowing for convenient shipping directly to the campus.

The success of this initiative reflects the power of community involvement and compassion in addressing the needs of foster youth. By providing essential items and personal notes of encouragement, the *Duffels of Dignity* program not only meets practical needs but also extends a message of support and kindness to those who need it most.
