Homeowner Lights Up Stilwell with Unique Bow and Arrow Technique

A spectacular holiday light display featuring over 4,000 lights has transformed a home in Stilwell, Kansas, thanks to the creativity of owner Tom Barnett. For the past 12 years, Barnett has dedicated his efforts to crafting a unique and evolving light show that aims to bring joy to the community.

Barnett’s impressive display is not only visually stunning but also a testament to his innovative approach. He shares that each year he alters the design to offer something fresh and exciting for those who pass by. “I change it up each year to do something different just so that everybody can smile when they drive by the house,” Barnett stated.

His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Barnett’s display has inspired his neighbors, and he has contributed his expertise to local initiatives, including the local Arboretum. The inspiration for his unique lighting technique came from a friend in Mission Hills. “I learned from a guy in Mission Hills, a friend of ours,” he recalled. “I watched him shoot a potato gun, and I thought, ‘We can do that.’”

What sets Barnett’s method apart is his use of a bow and arrow. He explains, “A bow and arrow comes in really handy. I shoot an arrow over a limb with fishing line on it. I’ve weighted the head of the arrow so it drops down.” This clever technique allows him to attach lights high in the trees, enhancing the visual appeal of his display.

The process of setting up the lights begins in September and continues through October and into November. Barnett expresses excitement about the project, saying, “This is really fun. I get a lot of joy out of doing this. It’s just something to do to make people smile.”

As the holiday season approaches, Barnett’s light display stands as a beacon of creativity and community spirit in Stilwell, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience the joy of the season.
