Dispose of Your Christmas Trees with Ease: Drop-Off Options Available

The District of Columbia Department of Public Works has announced the collection and disposal process for natural holiday trees and greenery. Residents are encouraged to participate in the curbside collection or utilize designated drop-off locations to ensure proper composting. This initiative supports Mayor Muriel Bowser’s commitment to sustainability through the city’s Zero Waste initiative.

According to the DPW, households serviced by the department, including single-family homes and small apartment buildings with three or fewer units, can place their holiday trees at the curb for collection. Trees should be placed out for pickup no later than seven days after the holiday season. If trees are not collected by that time, residents can call 311 to request a “Christmas Tree Removal – Seasonal” service.

Drop-Off Locations and Timeline

Residents also have the option to drop off their holiday trees and greenery at specified locations throughout the city. The designated drop-off sites will be available Monday through Friday, from 08:00 to 16:00 at the Guy Mason Recreation Center. These efforts aim to repurpose the trees into mulch, contributing to local landscaping and waste reduction.

For those who miss the collection window, trees placed out after February 28, 2026 should be left at the usual points for trash and recycling collection. Residents are advised that inclement weather may cause delays in service, so patience is appreciated during the post-holiday period.

Community Engagement and Sustainability Efforts

The DPW’s initiative reflects a broader community effort to reduce waste and promote environmental stewardship. By composting holiday trees and greenery, the city not only clears public spaces but also supports local ecosystems. The mulch created from the recycled trees will be used in various city beautification projects.

As the festive season concludes, residents are reminded to make environmentally conscious decisions about their waste. This year, many have opted to dispose of their Christmas trees sooner than in previous years, but the tradition of keeping pumpkins for decoration extends into January. The city’s collection services aim to facilitate responsible disposal, ensuring that holiday festivities can transition smoothly into the New Year.

For more information about the holiday tree disposal services, residents can visit the official DPW website or contact the department directly.
