The Discovery Shoppe, a non-profit organization based in Chico, California, has made a significant contribution to the Butte Environmental Council (BEC). On a recent occasion, volunteer Janet Fournier presented a check for $5,198 to Miranda Kokoszka, BEC Assistant Director, and Patricia Hironimus, Executive Director. The donation is aimed at enhancing BEC’s “Drop in the Bucket Community Composting Program,” which aligns with California’s SB1383 bill designed to minimize edible food waste in landfills.
Since its founding in 1959, the Discovery Shoppe has been dedicated to supporting local charitable organizations. This year, the organization plans to distribute over $165,381 to sixteen different charities, further exemplifying its commitment to community service. The funds will specifically bolster BEC’s efforts in promoting environmental education, advocacy, and stewardship among residents.
Located at 315 Flume Street in Chico, the Discovery Shoppe operates entirely through volunteer efforts, ensuring that all proceeds are reinvested into the community. The check presentation is part of the Shoppe’s annual initiative to support local non-profits, making a tangible difference in various sectors.
BEC has been pivotal in fostering environmental awareness and action within the community. The “Drop in the Bucket Community Composting Program” encourages residents to participate in composting, thereby supporting statewide efforts to reduce food waste. This initiative not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also educates the public on the importance of responsible waste management.
The collaboration between the Discovery Shoppe and the Butte Environmental Council illustrates the power of community partnerships in effecting positive change. Through such donations, local organizations can expand their reach and impact, ultimately benefiting the environment and the citizens of Chico.
As both organizations continue their work, they remain committed to addressing the pressing issues of environmental stewardship and community support, setting an example for others to follow.
