Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Creative Activities at Great Bend Library

Valentine’s Day festivities are set to unfold at the Great Bend Public Library with a series of engaging activities designed for book lovers and craft enthusiasts. On February 14, 2024, visitors can enjoy a range of events aimed at celebrating love and creativity in a community setting.

The library offers a unique date option for those seeking a low-cost outing. Couples can participate in a game of Chocolate Tic Tac Toe and embark on a Valentine’s scavenger hunt. Additionally, themed book displays will be available for browsing, providing an opportunity to discover new literary treasures. For those who prefer a cozy night in, the library’s selection of titles accessible through Libby and Hoopla allows readers to enjoy books from the comfort of their homes.

Crafting and Community Learning Opportunities

As part of the Valentine’s celebration, the library invites attendees to an Adult Craft session on the evening of February 14. Starting at 18:00, participants can create beautiful macramé moon decorations. Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with the east entrance open until 18:15.

In addition to holiday-themed activities, the library provides ongoing tech support and educational programs. The February computer classes will take place on Monday at 10:00 at the Senior Center, and a Brown Bag session will occur on Wednesday at noon in the library’s Lower Level Meeting Room. This initiative aims to assist individuals with technology-related questions.

The library also hosts a weekly Tech Tuesday at 11:00, where visitors can receive one-on-one tech help. For younger audiences, the Early Literacy Story Time will continue at 10:30 on Tuesdays, fostering early reading skills.

Book Clubs and Special Events

On February 20, the library will hold its monthly Open Book Club meeting at 19:00. This month’s featured book is “James” by Percival Everett, a reimagining of the classic story from the perspective of Jim. The novel has been praised for its insightful humor and depth, offering readers a fresh view on familiar narratives. Copies are available for checkout at the Front Desk for those wishing to participate.

Looking ahead, the deadline to register for the highly anticipated Cupcake Wars on February 24 is fast approaching. This competition invites teens in grades 6-12 to showcase their baking skills in a series of fun challenges. Interested participants can sign up at greatbendpl.info/teens.

For those intrigued by genealogy, the library conducts Genealogy Thursdays at 11:00, where visitors can seek assistance with their ancestry research. Whether beginning their journey or facing challenges with ongoing projects, attendees are encouraged to bring their questions.

Lastly, the Teen Manga & Anime Club welcomes new and seasoned fans to explore Japanese visual culture. The next meeting on February 19 will focus on “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” by Satoru Yamaguchi. Participants will read the first volume of the manga and view the corresponding first episode of the anime, followed by a related activity.

Haylee Huddleston, the Teen Services librarian, encourages the community to engage with the library’s winter newsletter and stay updated on events via Facebook and Instagram at @greatbendpl. For inquiries about programming or services, individuals can email [email protected] or call 620-792-2409.
