Caleb Martin delivered an impressive performance in the Dallas Mavericks’ recent victory over the Utah Jazz, marking a significant moment in a season marred by injuries. During the third quarter of the game, Martin intercepted a pass and executed a two-handed reverse dunk, showcasing his athleticism and skill. This standout play came as the Mavericks faced a second consecutive season plagued by injuries, but Martin’s increased role has proven pivotal.
With the absence of key players such as Cooper Flagg, who was sidelined, Martin stepped up, earning his first start in a Mavericks uniform. He contributed 14 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals in the blowout win, which was his sixth career game with at least 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists. The night before, Martin had already made an impact off the bench against the Denver Nuggets, scoring a personal-best 15 points as a Maverick.
“It was one of the more fun games I’ve played since I’ve been here,” Martin remarked after the game. “I would say probably the best offensive game I’ve had, just fun to be out there and be part of the competition and make an impact.”
The Mavericks’ injury woes have intensified, especially in January, with notable absences including Anthony Davis, PJ Washington, and Daniel Gafford. Illness has also affected players like Max Christie and Brandon Williams. As the team prepares for a rematch against the Jazz, Flagg is listed as doubtful, while Washington and Christie are probable to return.
Despite these challenges, Martin has embodied the “next man up” mentality often emphasized by head coach Jason Kidd. “He’s put in the work. He’s been patient,” Kidd stated after the game. “You can see that is paying off for him, not just tonight, but the last couple of games.” Martin’s energy and contributions have been crucial in helping the team maintain their competitive edge.
In his last two games, Martin has averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3.0 steals. He has also demonstrated his shooting prowess, hitting three of five attempts from beyond the arc and achieving a remarkable 13 of 17 shooting overall. This kind of production aligns with the Mavericks’ expectations when they acquired him from the Philadelphia 76ers last February in exchange for Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round draft pick.
The Mavericks boast a deep roster when healthy, particularly at Martin’s position, making it challenging for players to find a rhythm within a 10-man rotation. Martin attributes his improved performance to quicker decision-making and better health. “Just thinking less. Feeling better,” he explained. “I’m one of the guys who tries to impact as much as I can as quick as I possibly can.”
Martin’s transition to the Mavericks was not without its hurdles. He joined the team with a sprained hip, an injury that complicated the initial trade agreement and resulted in the 76ers attaching a future second-round pick. The lingering pain from his hip affected his performance last season, where he averaged just 5.4 points in 14 games. This season has seen a further dip, with a career-low average of 2.5 points. However, Martin expressed optimism about his current health.
“I feel way better than I did at the start of the season,” he noted, highlighting his recent athleticism with back-to-back dunks, including one against the Nuggets that left opponent Peyton Watson in disbelief. His defensive capabilities are also noteworthy, having achieved three steals in consecutive games for the third time in his career.
“I think he’s just starting to get his feet back under him,” said teammate Marshall. “He’s being the Caleb we all used to. Proud of him. A lot of people don’t make it back from what he was going through.”
Reflecting on his journey since being traded to Dallas, Martin candidly acknowledged the challenges he’s faced over the past 11 months. “It’s been tough. It’s definitely been one of the more tougher years I’ve had,” he admitted. “But I’ve been through tougher things in life and at the end of the day, it’s basketball. I love the game and I’m always up for a challenge. I’ve always figured it out, no matter where I’ve been. I’m gonna continue to do that.”
As the Mavericks continue to navigate their injury challenges, Martin’s recent performances provide a glimmer of hope for the team, highlighting his resilience and potential to contribute significantly as the season progresses.
