Artist Fred Jackson Unveils Unique West Chester Alleyway Exhibit

Artist Fred Jackson will showcase his latest work in an exhibit titled “West Chester Discoveries,” opening on January 9, 2024, at Church Street Gallery in West Chester. This exhibition runs through February 28, 2024, and highlights the often-overlooked alleyways and backyards of the borough, providing a fresh perspective on a familiar locale.

Jackson, an artist based in King of Prussia, has chosen to focus on these hidden spaces rather than the more traditional front facades of West Chester’s architecture. With approximately 35 oil paintings on display, he aims to capture the essence of the places that delivery drivers navigate and where locals park their vehicles. “I find my subjects in common places: right under your nose,” Jackson remarked while preparing for the exhibit.

Many of the featured pieces reflect Jackson’s personal connection to West Chester, where his family has roots on Franklin Street. After dedicating 35 years to a career in landscape architecture, he now devotes his time to painting and teaching at the Wayne Art Center. His artistic process often includes plein air painting—creating art outdoors on location—though he also uses photographs and sketches to inform his studio work, especially during winter months when outdoor painting can be challenging.

Exploring Creativity and Process

Jackson’s approach to painting is marked by a sense of spontaneity and experimentation. He describes painting outdoors as exhilarating, stating, “I get fired up by everything from wild nature spots to bustling city scenes.” His technique involves applying bold colors and strong shapes to convey the unique vibe of each location, even if it leads to an abstract interpretation.

His journey as an artist began at the age of eight, inspired by his father, who was also an artist. About a decade ago, Jackson picked up a paintbrush, dedicating two to three hours most mornings to his craft, aiming to capture his freshest thoughts and ideas during this time.

“I like to experiment,” he said. “I have a reasonable knowledge of my paints, tools, and brushes. With them, the painting process becomes a creative and improvisational exploration.” This exploration involves a dynamic physical process of applying, scraping, and repainting, as Jackson seeks to distill what is essential in each piece.

He elaborated on his creative philosophy: “It’s all about creativity, a creative approach and allowing yourself to not think so much. You can’t over-intellectualize when painting.” For Jackson, the key to knowing when a painting is finished lies in clarity of intention. “A painting is finished before it’s done,” he explained. “If my intention is clear, the painting may be finished, with no need for gratuitous marks.”
