Arizona’s Salvation Army Faces $775,000 Shortfall as Holiday Deadline Approaches

The Salvation Army’s Southwest Division is currently facing a significant fundraising challenge, with a shortfall of $775,000 as it approaches the end of its annual holiday Red Kettle campaign in Arizona. The organization aims to raise a total of $2.3 million by Christmas Eve, and officials are urging the community to contribute as the campaign enters its final days.

In Surprise, Arizona, volunteer Carl Shelton is playing a pivotal role in efforts to bridge this financial gap. A polio survivor, Shelton has dedicated the last four years to volunteering as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He stands outside a local Fry’s Food Store, dressed in a festive Santa Claus outfit, complete with a real white beard, while seated in a wheelchair adorned with Christmas lights and playing cheerful holiday music.

Shelton’s approach to attracting donations is both heartfelt and engaging. He aims to connect with passersby, sharing stories of how the Salvation Army has positively impacted lives within the community. “I hear all kinds of stories about how the Salvation Army helped them back in their earlier days,” he stated. “It makes you warm knowing that this is all going to help somebody that’s in need.”

The public relations director for the Salvation Army Southwest Division, Scott Johnson, expressed optimism despite the current deficit. “The people of Arizona are very generous,” Johnson remarked. “We’re hopeful we can make up that deficit here in the next few days.” This sentiment echoes the spirit of giving that the holiday season embodies.

As part of his volunteer work, Shelton delights in handing out candy canes to children who contribute to his red kettle. He describes the smiles from these young donors as an “added bonus” that makes his efforts worthwhile. “The smiles you get from the kids, man, it’s worth it 100%,” Shelton added.

The Red Kettle campaign will continue through December 24, 2023, with kettles stationed at various storefronts across Arizona. For those unable to donate in person, contributions can also be made online to support the campaign’s goal.

Shelton’s vibrant presence and dedication highlight the spirit of community service that defines the Salvation Army’s mission. As the organization works to meet its fundraising target, it relies on the generosity of local residents to continue providing vital assistance to those in need.
