In response to the looming shutdown of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), several restaurants in Seattle and Tacoma are stepping up to provide free meals to families in need. Starting November 1, 2025, many families reliant on SNAP benefits face a significant loss due to federal funding uncertainties resulting from a government shutdown. This situation has prompted local businesses to take action.
Community Support from Local Restaurants
Toasted Bagels & Coffee, co-founded by Murat Akyuz, is one of the establishments leading the charge. Akyuz shared that both he and co-founder Jaafar’s families depended on SNAP benefits during their childhoods. “My family relied on SNAP benefits,” Akyuz stated. “It’s important for us to give back to the community and help those who are struggling.”
The restaurant has initiated a program allowing local families to receive free food, bagels, and drinks. Akyuz explained the process: “If they just say, ‘Hey, can I put this order on my neighbor’s tab?’ No questions asked, we will provide them the meal for free.” The first 100 meals are covered by Toasted, with subsequent meals funded through community donations.
Since launching the program, Toasted has seen remarkable community support, raising over $45,000 within just four days. This amount is projected to provide approximately 9,000 meals to families facing food insecurity. “It’s just so awesome to see that people are looking out for their neighbor when the systems that we’ve built around us aren’t,” Akyuz remarked.
Radnor’s Burgers & Beignets Joins the Effort
In Tacoma, Radnor’s Burgers & Beignets has also implemented a similar initiative. General Manager Irving Amezcua expressed the importance of providing meals without stigma. “There’s a sense of, ‘Man, I don’t want to announce that I’m struggling,'” he explained. By adopting the ‘Neighbor’s Tab’ concept, families can discreetly receive assistance without feeling embarrassed.
Radnor’s is offering free meals, including burgers, fries, and apples, to families impacted by the SNAP cuts. Amezcua emphasized that all proceeds from the initiative will go directly to assist those in the community facing hunger, regardless of when SNAP may be restored. He shared a touching encounter with a mother who expressed uncertainty about seeking help, assuring her that there is no shame in asking for assistance.
As the situation evolves, both Toasted Bagels & Coffee and Radnor’s Burgers & Beignets are committed to supporting their communities. The outreach from these local businesses highlights the importance of community solidarity during challenging times. Residents are encouraged to contribute to these initiatives or donate to local food banks to ensure that no one goes hungry in the region.
