The strike involving nurses in New York City is ongoing, but significant progress has been made regarding health care benefits. According to the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), an agreement has been reached with several hospitals to maintain current health care coverage for nurses and their families. This announcement was made in a statement on Sunday, February 4, 2024, indicating that the deal marks a critical step in negotiations with Montefiore Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
NYSNA highlighted that the agreement ensures the continuation of the high-quality NYSNA Plan A health coverage without any cuts. The union stated that “NYSNA nurses fought and cleared a major hurdle on one of the key sticking points in bargaining” while emphasizing their commitment to negotiating other essential issues. Despite this progress, the hospitals have yet to issue a public statement regarding the agreement.
The strike has involved approximately 15,000 nurses who are advocating for improved pay, increased staffing levels, and enhanced protections against workplace violence. Hospital representatives have previously described these demands as unreasonable.
Negotiations resumed on Thursday, February 1, 2024, marking the eleventh day of the strike. Although discussions were held, no agreement was reached at that time. NYSNA reiterated that nurses would continue to strike “until we reach full tentative contract agreements that protect patient and nurse safety.” Following a significant snowstorm that impacted the city, picketing activities are set to resume on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
The strike has drawn attention from notable figures, including NYC Mayor Mamdani and Senator Bernie Sanders, who joined the striking nurses on the picket line, demonstrating solidarity with their cause.
As negotiations progress, nurses remain hopeful for a resolution that addresses their demands and ensures fair conditions for both patients and staff. The situation continues to evolve, and both the hospitals and the union are expected to engage further in discussions aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement.
