Jonathan Van Ness Defends Weight Loss Journey Amid Backlash

Jonathan Van Ness, the star of *Queer Eye*, has responded to criticism following his significant weight loss of 70 pounds using the weight loss medication GLP-1. In a TikTok video posted on October 30, 2023, the 38-year-old addressed accusations that he had abandoned his body positivity stance.

In his video, Van Ness emphasized his commitment to body neutrality, stating, “The way that you look does not define your worth, doesn’t define your lovableness. You are worth love and worth celebration, no matter what your body looks like.” He expressed that his decision to use GLP-1 stemmed from a personal health issue he experienced in 2023, which left him feeling unwell. Alongside medication, he has also incorporated exercise, including Pilates, into his routine.

Van Ness noted, “I’ve never had abs. And I feel really good, so I’m taking my shirt off a lot.” He reflected on his self-image, saying, “I was always really cute, and I always felt cute. But I just didn’t feel good, and now I feel good.” He described his current state as feeling “like a f**king minx right now,” expressing his desire to cherish his physical appearance as he ages.

In January 2023, Van Ness disclosed his use of GLP-1, which includes medications such as Ozempic, designed to manage diabetes and aid in weight loss. At that time, he shared side-by-side before-and-after photos on his Instagram Story, revealing a weight loss of 66 pounds. He candidly admitted, “Yes, I am on a GLP-1 or a weight-loss medication. If you have been following me for a long time, you’ll know that I gained and lost weight several times very publicly. And this time in my life, I knew that I needed a little bit of extra help.”

Van Ness began his GLP-1 injections in September 2024, noting a marked improvement in his well-being after struggling with binge eating. He shared, “I was consistently making decisions that I regretted with compulsive eating and with bingeing that just left me feeling really not good, depressed and out of control.” He expressed newfound control over his eating habits, stating, “It has helped me so massively, and that’s part of why I wanna be honest with you about it because I know how important asking for help is, and how much asking for help can change your life in terms of healing. This time, I needed help.”

For individuals struggling with eating disorders, resources are available through the National Alliance for Eating Disorders. They offer support via their website and hotline at +1 662-1235, as well as text support by messaging “ALLIANCE” to 741741.

Van Ness’s candid approach to discussing his health journey highlights the ongoing conversation about body image and the complexities surrounding weight loss. His openness encourages others to seek help and support when needed, reinforcing the idea that health and well-being extend beyond physical appearance.
