Jets Legend Nick Mangold Passes Away at 41 After Health Struggles

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold passed away on Saturday night at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease. His death marks a significant loss for the NFL community and fans who cherished his contributions both on and off the field.

In 2006, during the NFL Draft Combine, a genetic defect was discovered that led to chronic kidney issues. Recently, Mangold had informed his followers on social media that he was in need of a kidney transplant. His health struggles did not diminish the admiration and respect he garnered throughout his career.

Legacy of Excellence and Leadership

Mangold joined the Jets in 2006 and quickly became a fan favorite. Known for his remarkable work ethic and distinctive long hair, he is regarded as one of the greatest players in the franchise’s history. Jets owner Woody Johnson emphasized Mangold’s impact in a statement, saying, “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.”

Over the course of his eleven-year career, Mangold was selected as an All-Pro three times, earning First-team honors in 2009 and 2010, as well as Second-team recognition in 2011. His presence on the field was instrumental in helping the Jets achieve a top 10 ranking in rushing six times during his tenure, including leading the league in 2009. Mangold played a crucial role in the Jets’ advancement to the AFC Championship game in both 2010 and 2011.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022. Just last week, he was named among the 52 Modern-Era players eligible for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class, underscoring his lasting impact on the sport.

A Fond Farewell

Born in Westerville, Ohio, Mangold played college football at Ohio State, where he started 33 of 45 games and was twice named All-Big Ten. He was a member of the 2002 National Championship team that triumphed over Miami in a memorable title game.

Johnson concluded his heartfelt statement by extending condolences to Mangold’s family, including his wife Jenny and their four children: Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. “On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we offer our sincere condolences to all who loved him,” Johnson said. “Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.”

As tributes pour in from fans and fellow players alike, the legacy of Nick Mangold will undoubtedly endure, serving as a testament to his remarkable career and the impact he had on the game of football.
