A distinctive underbite belonging to a puppy in Alberta, Canada, has captured the hearts of thousands online. The dog, named Arvo, is an Australian shepherd mix who will celebrate his third birthday in March 2024. Originally found under a porch as a puppy, Arvo’s unique feature was initially described by his previous owner as “slight.” However, as he grew, his underbite developed into a prominent and endearing characteristic.
Arvo’s owner, Erika, emphasized the emotional journey of adopting the puppy. “Four of his siblings unfortunately didn’t make it,” she shared in an interview with Newsweek. “We just felt so terrible for him and wanted to give him a home.” At the time of adoption, Erika was informed that Arvo had a minor underbite, a detail that the family’s veterinarian supported, stating it was barely noticeable.
As Arvo matured, his bottom lip began to protrude more significantly. “Around four months, his bottom lip started really peeking out,” Erika explained. “We could no longer deny that it maybe wasn’t so slight after all.” Notably, Arvo’s suspected father also had a mild underbite, a trait that Erika found charming from the beginning. “I remember saying, ‘Oh, I hope you look just like your dad.’ And here we are,” she recalled.
While the underbite has a striking appearance, it has not hindered Arvo’s life. Instead, it has become his defining trait. Arvo has gained substantial popularity on TikTok, where his daily antics, highlighted by his goofy grin, have attracted a large following. One of his videos has amassed over 1.8 million views, showcasing the appeal of his unique smile.
Erika noted that people frequently stop them on the street to comment on Arvo’s smile. “We’ve had a few people stop us on the street to comment on his smile and tell us we should start a page for him,” she said. The positive feedback extends to TikTok, where fans express their admiration. One user wrote, “Never seen this page or dog but you got a new follower now just because of those teefs,” while another joked, “The vet’s right… I don’t notice anything.”
The overwhelming response to Arvo has left Erika feeling grateful. “I have been blown away by the love for our guy,” she stated. “People have been so kind, and it is so much fun seeing all the other dogs with goofy toofs out there.”
