Oklahoma lawmakers are moving forward with a proposal to honor the late country music star, Toby Keith, by naming a new highway after him. The House recently adopted House Concurrent Resolution 1019, which seeks to rename a proposed turnpike project the “Toby Keith Expressway.” If approved, this roadway will connect Interstate 44 East to Interstate 35 and continue North and East to Interstate 40.
The initiative is part of the broader ACCESS Oklahoma Long-Range Plan, aimed at updating and expanding the state’s turnpike system. The resolution was officially adopted by the Oklahoma House on March 15, 2024, and now awaits consideration in the Senate.
Born in Clinton, Oklahoma, and raised in Moore, Keith became a celebrated figure in country music, known for selling over 40 million records and producing more than 20 number-one singles. He passed away on February 5, 2024, after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a rich legacy that profoundly impacted the music industry and his home state.
The authors of the resolution believe that naming the expressway after Keith would serve as a fitting tribute to his contributions and the fondness many Oklahomans have for him. Keith’s influence extended beyond music; he was also known for his philanthropy and support for military personnel.
With the resolution now in the hands of the Senate, supporters are hopeful for a swift approval process that would allow the expressway to bear the name of this iconic artist. This initiative reflects the community’s desire to honor local talent and preserve Keith’s legacy for future generations.
