Joshua Robison, Beloved Arts Advocate, Passes Away at 79

Joshua Robison, a prominent figure in the arts community and the husband of renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, passed away in his sleep on February 22, 2023, at the age of 79. Robison was an integral part of the San Francisco Symphony, where he was a constant presence at performances and various civic and arts events throughout San Francisco and South Florida.

Under the artistic leadership of Tilson Thomas from 1995 to 2020, Robison’s role extended beyond that of a supportive partner. He was considered a vital creative collaborator and supporter of the Symphony’s mission, making significant contributions to the cultural landscape of the region.

A Multifaceted Career in the Arts and Education

Robison graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1964, earning a gymnastics scholarship. He won the NCAA championship in 1967, showcasing his diverse talents early on. Following his athletic career, he shifted his focus to advocacy in public education and contributed to the Bank Street College of Education.

In 1987, Robison played a pivotal role in founding the New World Symphony, an organization dedicated to training young musicians and fostering innovative approaches to classical music. His influence on the organization and the broader arts community was profound, as he tirelessly worked to support and promote the arts.

Last year, Robison organized a special concert to celebrate Tilson Thomas’s 80th birthday at Davies Symphony Hall. During the event, he sat beside Tilson Thomas on stage, underscoring their deep personal and professional bond. The concert concluded with Tilson Thomas singing “Some Other Time,” a performance that resonated deeply with the audience, particularly the lines: “There’s so much more embracing / Still to be done / But time is racing.”

Robison and Tilson Thomas first became partners in 1976 and celebrated their marriage in 2014. In addition to his husband, Robison is survived by his sisters, including flutist Paula Robison, who also continues to make her mark in the music world.
