Holly Hunter Embraces Change as Captain in ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’

Holly Hunter steps into the “Star Trek” universe with her role as Captain Nahla Ake in the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” available for streaming on Paramount+ starting October 5, 2023. This series is set in the 32nd century, a time period previously explored in “Star Trek: Discovery.” It focuses on the first new class of cadets in over a century, showcasing their journey to become officers in a changing world.

Captain Nahla Ake, who is half-Alien and half-Lanthanite, serves as both the captain of the USS Athena and the chancellor of Starfleet Academy. In a virtual press conference, Hunter emphasized the show’s exploration of conflict and evolution. She stated, “Stories are always about conflict, a world is in flux.” The series portrays the Federation during a significant transition, following the catastrophic event known as The Burn, which occurred 125 years prior.

“Starfleet Academy” is constantly examining that flux, Hunter remarked, highlighting the need for evolution in the face of new challenges. The show marks a notable departure from previous iterations of “Star Trek,” as it focuses exclusively on the Academy, providing a fresh perspective on the franchise’s legacy.

Hunter expressed excitement about the energy brought by the new cast, describing the environment as “chaotic, spontaneous, and joyful.” At 67, Hunter, who has received four Oscar nominations and won one, remains passionate about her craft. “When I showed up to Toronto, where we’re shooting, I looked at the sets,” she shared, recalling her childhood fascination with the series. The intricate design of the sets, reminiscent of mid-century aesthetics, sparked a sense of nostalgia and thrill in her.

While she does not consider herself a “Star Trek” aficionado, Hunter finds joy in the sense of wonder that the series evokes. She noted, “That’s one of the reasons why a lot of people watch ‘Star Trek’: It gives you a sense of wonder.”

Hunter aims to portray a character who embraces change. She explained that children and youth often navigate vivid transformations without hesitation, while older individuals may struggle with the concept. “I wanted Nahla to be the opposite of that,” she said. “Even though I was 422 years old, I wanted to be youthful. I wanted to choose youth.”

The series promises to explore themes of growth and adaptation, making it a timely addition to the “Star Trek” franchise. With a blend of veteran talent and fresh faces, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” invites viewers to witness the evolution of both its characters and the universe they inhabit.
