Helen Mirren Celebrates Jane Fonda’s Bold Life Philosophy at Gala

Helen Mirren praised Jane Fonda for her “radical and controversial” outlook on life during an exclusive interview at the L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Celebration held on December 2, 2023, in Los Angeles. Mirren, 80, expressed admiration for Fonda, who is also a L’Oréal ambassador. She described Fonda’s life as “remarkable,” highlighting her energy and commitment to various causes. “She’s definitely one of my Women of Worth,” Mirren stated.

The L’Oréal Paris event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Women of Worth program, recognizing ten exceptional honorees who have made significant contributions as female innovators and leaders across the United States. This year’s honorees included individuals such as Yasmine Arrington Brooks, Amy Bowers Cordalis, and Sloane Davidson, among others. The gala took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, emphasizing L’Oréal’s commitment to uplifting women’s voices and achievements.

Mirren shared that despite her extensive career in film spanning over six decades, she often struggles with confidence. “I don’t have confidence. I have absolutely no confidence whatsoever. But I pretend I do,” she remarked. This candid admission highlights the complexities many face, regardless of their public success.

In addition to her reflections on Fonda, Mirren is set to star in the upcoming film “Goodbye June,” which marks the directorial debut of actress Kate Winslet. The film, scheduled for release in select theaters on December 12, 2023, and on Netflix starting Christmas Eve, features a star-studded cast, including Toni Collette and Andrea Riseborough. The plot revolves around four estranged siblings who must confront their past as they come together for their mother, portrayed by Mirren, who is facing terminal illness.

Winslet, who also stars in the film, expressed her enthusiasm for directing, noting that the script was initially written by her son, Joe Anders. “I realized it was very much not [just a school project] and could definitely be a film,” Winslet explained. Her journey into directing represents a significant step in her career, as she aims to elevate women’s representation in film.

Mirren’s acknowledgment of Fonda and the celebration of women at the L’Oréal Paris event reflect a broader commitment to recognizing and empowering female leaders. As the Women of Worth program continues to honor those making impactful changes, it reinforces the importance of role models in shaping future generations.
