A new theatrical adaptation, “Sherlock Holmes: The Great Detective,” is currently captivating audiences at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. The show runs until February 15, 2024, and promises a series of action-packed adventures featuring the beloved detective.
The production, directed and written by Bill Van Horn, takes viewers on a journey from Switzerland to London, France, and Luxembourg. Van Horn describes the style as “madcap” with an abundance of comedy. Actor Harry Smith, who portrays the iconic detective, emphasizes the multifaceted nature of the character, stating that “Sherlock plays a number of other roles within the play” due to his mastery of disguise.
The props play a significant role in establishing character, with Holmes’ pipe serving as an instant identifier. Van Horn, who also portrays Dr. Watson, highlighted the dynamic between the two characters. “What I was interested in as a writer was the relationship between Watson and Holmes as they got older,” he said. Watson, often seen as Holmes’ confidant, also provides crucial support during their escapades.
The world premiere of this play adapts two stories from the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first act presents Holmes’ apparent “demise,” while the second act sees his return to Watson’s life as they once again tackle crime together. Van Horn notes, “The heart of the show, I think, is friendship.”
The cast includes six actors playing various roles, with Mary Martello taking on the character of Mrs. Hudson, Holmes’ fearless landlady at 221B Baker Street. Martello also portrays Colonel Sebastian Moran, described as a formidable antagonist. However, the true arch-nemesis remains Moriarty, whose defeat Holmes pursues as a defining element of his legacy.
Smith elaborates on Moriarty’s character, stating, “He enjoys getting the better of his adversaries,” and capturing Moriarty is central to Holmes’ quest.
