Provo Airport is moving forward with plans to expand its facilities, proposing to add new gates and renovate its interior. The expansion aims to accommodate a growing number of passengers seeking affordable travel options. To fund this project, airport officials are requesting approval for a bond totaling $20 million from local residents.
The proposed expansion would significantly increase the airport’s size, potentially tripling its current footprint. According to Jared Penrod, the engineering and planning manager for Provo Airport, the project would include three additional gates on both the north and south sides of the airport. Enhanced facilities for concessions and airline storage are also part of the plan.
Penrod emphasizes that the funding is already allocated but needs to be expedited through the bond. “The airport project is funded; we already have funds that have been dedicated to this project,” he stated. The bond would essentially allow the airport to access these funds more quickly, as some of the existing financing comes in yearly increments. Notably, part of the repayment for the bond would utilize a quarter-cent sales tax already earmarked for transportation.
The push for expansion aligns with increased passenger demand. Many travelers are turning to Provo Airport for its competitive pricing and less stressful travel experience. Local resident Gordon Felesina expressed support for the expansion, noting its benefits for those traveling to California. “Having the airport here has really been beneficial; it’s made traveling back home much easier,” he said. However, he acknowledged that the current size of the airport sometimes limits flight availability.
A public hearing regarding the expansion is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on March 12, 2024, during the Provo City Council meeting. Felesina believes that the proposed expansion could significantly boost the local economy. “It brings a lot of industry and a lot of people, and it usually ends up just growing the overall economy in the city,” he remarked, indicating that he expects strong community support for the project.
As Provo Airport prepares to address the community’s concerns and gather feedback, the expansion plan signifies a proactive approach to meeting the travel needs of its growing passenger base. The upcoming hearing will be crucial for gauging public sentiment and securing the necessary approvals to move forward with this ambitious project.
