Fairbanks Launches Grant Program to Revitalize Downtown Core

The City of Fairbanks is set to launch an extensive revitalization initiative aimed at transforming its downtown area through the expansion of the Storefront Improvement Program. Chief of Staff Mike Sanders announced that if successful, residents and visitors can expect to see a more vibrant downtown featuring fresh paint, new lighting, murals, and improved entryways within the next two years.

This program specifically targets vacant storefronts, aiming to reactivate these spaces and enhance the overall aesthetic of the downtown core. Sanders indicated that projects focusing on vacant buildings will likely receive top priority in this year’s application process.

Funding and Accessibility for Local Businesses

The Storefront Improvement Program offers grants of up to $50,000 with a dollar-for-dollar matching requirement, making it accessible not only for larger businesses but also for smaller “mom and pop” shops. Sanders emphasized that business owners do not need to apply for the full amount; projects can start as low as $1,000. This flexibility aims to encourage participation from a diverse range of local businesses.

Moreover, the Explore Fairbanks Downtown Enhancement Fund can be utilized to meet the matching requirement or even fund entire projects that might not fit standard city guidelines. This additional resource aims to streamline the funding process and support a wide variety of improvement initiatives.

Encouraging Community Involvement

While the program seeks to honor the historic character of the downtown area, it remains open to modern branding as long as it contributes to a clear improvement. Sanders urged business owners who may be hesitant to apply to take the plunge, noting that even those who were denied funding in the first round last year received assistance from city staff to successfully secure funding in subsequent rounds.

Applications for the first funding round are due by April 1, 2024. The application process has been simplified to a few pages to encourage participation, and business owners can easily find the application on the City of Fairbanks website. By checking a single box on the application form, applicants can also be considered for additional funding through the Explore Fairbanks program.

The initiative represents a significant step towards revitalizing Fairbanks’ downtown area, fostering economic growth, and enhancing community engagement. As the city moves forward with this program, it aims to create not only a more visually appealing environment but also a thriving hub for local businesses and residents alike.
