CMAC Launches Second Edition of EmpowHERd Voices Program

The Community Media Access Collaborative (CMAC) has announced the launch of its second edition of the EmpowHERd Voices program, aimed at empowering women in the Central Valley, California. This initiative offers a 10-week documentary filmmaking course for women aged 18 and above, providing them with the tools to share stories about inspirational women from their communities.

Starting on February 21, 2026, and concluding with a public showcase on April 25, 2026, the program will guide ten participants through the stages of documentary filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production. Participants will meet weekly at CMAC for hands-on training, and at the end of the course, each participant will receive a stipend of $500. No prior filmmaking experience or equipment is necessary, making the program accessible to beginners.

Empowering Women Through Storytelling

Designed to tackle the historical underrepresentation of women in the media, EmpowHERd Voices provides a platform for local filmmakers to cultivate their skills and learn from experienced female media makers. The initiative not only aims to enhance the representation of women on screen but also fosters lasting connections that support the growth of participants as storytellers.

Angelica Hernandez, CMAC’s Education Specialist and program mentor, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Women are not always seen in media, especially in key, decision-making production roles, and we wanted to help change that. This is a program built by women for women, rooted in mentorship and hands-on learning. We hope participants leave with confidence in their voice and skills to keep telling their stories long after the program ends.”

Alexandra Carrillo, a CMAC Teaching Artist and co-program mentor, highlighted the transformative power of documentary filmmaking. She remarked, “In EmpowHERd Voices, women step behind the camera to tell the stories of inspiring women in their own communities. I’m excited to guide this next group as they develop their skills, grow in confidence, and bring fresh, powerful perspectives to the screen.”
