A popular brunch destination in Philadelphia is using its culinary creativity to support a beloved local chef facing serious health challenges. Sunrise Social has introduced a new menu item, the Sunrise Surf N’ Turf, with proceeds designated to assist Chef Reuben “Big Rube” Harley, who is battling stage 4B prostate cancer, heart failure, and kidney failure. This initiative aims to alleviate some of the financial burdens Harley faces during his treatment.
The Sunrise Surf N’ Turf is available throughout February 2026 at both Sunrise Social locations in Philadelphia and Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Priced at $32.99, the dish features grilled lamb chops and butter-roasted lobster tail, served over the restaurant’s signature three-cheese grits, and garnished with roasted red peppers, aji verde, and fresh herbs. The restaurant has committed to donating a portion of the proceeds to help cover Harley’s essential living and medical expenses not included in his health insurance.
Harley is a prominent figure in Philadelphia’s culinary scene, with a diverse career that includes culinary projects, fashion photography, and entrepreneurship. He is known for his signature barbecue sauce brand and has made significant contributions to local food culture. Since his diagnosis became public, a community-led GoFundMe campaign has raised over $16,000 to support him.
This initiative holds personal significance for Aaron Anderson, the founder of Sunrise Social and a long-time friend of Harley. Their professional journey began after Anderson experienced Harley’s cooking at an event, leading to various collaborations during the pandemic, including the launch of two ghost kitchens in Philadelphia, each offering multiple culinary concepts. The pair also partnered to open Big Rube’s Fried Chicken at Subaru Park, home to Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union.
Anderson expressed that the menu initiative aims to reflect the community’s support for Harley, who he described as one of Philadelphia’s most admired figures. He hopes that the limited-time offering will not only attract diners but also highlight the crucial role local businesses can play in supporting their own during challenging times.
Sunrise Social emphasizes that this culinary effort transforms a plate of surf and turf into a source of tangible support for Harley and serves as a reminder of community solidarity. This initiative illustrates how food can unite people and provide meaningful assistance during critical moments.
