GigaBite Robotics Team Seeks Community Support for STEM Growth

The GigaBite Robotics team, comprising 11 middle and high school students from South Lake Tahoe, is actively seeking donations to enhance STEM opportunities in their community. As part of the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), Team 20681 has been instrumental in mentoring local youth and fostering engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through various initiatives.

Over the past year, GigaBite Robotics has made significant contributions to the local STEM landscape. The team notably mentored a rookie FIRST Lego League (FLL) team that received the Rising Stars Award and competed at the Northern Nevada Championship. In addition to mentoring, they have organized STEM camps, workshops, and community events aimed at introducing younger students to robotics, engineering, and coding.

As they embark on their fifth year in the FTC, the team is navigating this season’s challenge, titled Decode. This year’s challenge has pushed them to develop skills in data-driven design, custom CAD-built mechanisms, and the integration of software and hardware. The team emphasizes the importance of Gracious Professionalism, a core value of FIRST, which promotes collaboration and respect in competitive environments.

Community Impact and Outreach

GigaBite Robotics’ influence extends beyond competition. They have been instrumental in mentoring younger teams and supporting FTC teams across Nevada and internationally. The team volunteers at FTC and FLL competitions, hosts local scrimmages, and collaborates with local schools and Lake Tahoe Community College to facilitate events like STEM Discovery Night. Their outreach efforts have successfully engaged over 500 students through hands-on STEM camps and programs over the past three summers.

To sustain and expand their initiatives, GigaBite Robotics is appealing to the community for donations. The funds raised will directly support the acquisition of essential robot parts, 3D filament, registration and competition fees, tools, travel expenses, and outreach programs. The team aims to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent students from exploring STEM opportunities.

The support from the community plays a crucial role in inspiring curiosity, building confidence, and fostering a stronger future in STEM for South Lake Tahoe’s youth. GigaBite Robotics expresses gratitude to all who consider investing in local students and innovation.
