Pope Leo XIV Calls for Global Peace Amid Criticism of Russia

Pope Leo XIV issued a heartfelt call for “one full day of peace throughout the world” during his Christmas address delivered at Castel Gandolfo in Rome. This appeal comes as he criticized Russia for declining to implement a holiday cease-fire amid ongoing conflicts, particularly in Ukraine. “I once again make this appeal to all people of good will: that, at least on the feast of the birth of the Savior, one day of peace may be respected,” the first American pontiff stated on December 25, 2023.

During the address, Pope Leo responded to questions from reporters, focusing on global issues such as the ongoing violence in the Middle East and Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. “Truly, among the things that cause me great sadness in these days is the fact that Russia has apparently refused the request for a Christmas truce,” he remarked shortly after reports emerged of Russian strikes in several regions of Ukraine.

Pope Highlights Human Life’s Value

The Pope also commented on the recent visit of Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa to the Gaza Strip, where he experienced a fragile cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. “They are trying to celebrate the feast in the midst of a situation that remains very precarious. Let us hope that the peace agreement will move forward,” Leo expressed. His remarks underscore the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by civilians in conflict zones.

In addition to discussing international affairs, the Pope addressed domestic issues, including a recent law passed in Illinois permitting physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. Expressing disappointment, he noted his previous discussions with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker about the bill. “We were very clear about the need to respect the sacredness of life, from beginning to end. And unfortunately … he decided to sign that bill. I am very disappointed by this,” the Pope stated.

Pope Leo XIV urged people worldwide to “reflect on the nature of human life, on the value of human life” during the Christmas season. He emphasized the importance of respect for life, saying, “God became human like us in order to show us what it truly means to live human life.” His hope is that respect for life may grow “once again at every moment of human existence, from conception to natural death.”

A Tradition of Peace

Papal calls for peace during the Christmas season have a long-standing tradition, dating back hundreds of years. This practice was notably solidified in the modern era by Pope Benedict XV, who, during World War I in 1914, urged for a temporary truce to honor the holiday. Although an official cease-fire did not occur, some soldiers on the Western Front took it upon themselves to halt fighting, gathering in no man’s land to exchange food and sing Christmas carols.

As the world continues to grapple with conflict and division, Pope Leo XIV’s message serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing need for peace and understanding among all people. His appeal for a day of global peace resonates deeply, especially during a time traditionally associated with goodwill and reflection.
