UPDATE: Today, fourth graders at Brecknock Elementary School unveiled their innovative mock businesses during an annual symposium, captivating a small crowd with their entrepreneurial spirit. The event, held in the school library, features the launch of several new businesses in the creative, student-built “Sweet Read City.”
The annual business symposium, taking place on November 21, is a highlight of the school year, providing students with hands-on experience in economics and entrepreneurship. Among the businesses showcased are GMIS Care Cart and Mustang Keystone, reflecting the hard work and creativity of these young entrepreneurs.
According to Rachel Sebastian, librarian and event organizer, the symposium is designed to teach students vital concepts about the economy and community interdependence. “Sweet Read City serves as a backdrop for understanding real-world business concepts,” Sebastian stated.
Throughout the project, students connected with local businesses like Classic Harley Davidson and East Penn Manufacturing, learning about their operations and career opportunities. This experiential learning approach, modeled after the Total Experience Learning framework, allows students to engage directly with business owners, enhancing their understanding of entrepreneurship in a practical setting.
The culmination of this educational journey features students demonstrating their knowledge by presenting new businesses added to Sweet Read City, which mirror actual businesses in Berks County. The day is filled with excitement as students participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing their achievements.
